It was prophesied by cartoons and
books that in the 21 century we would now be living in a world where flying cars
existed. Technology however has not caught up as quickly as believed, but
significant developments have been made in the green and electrical vehicle
production. The majority of the vehicles that are out on the roads are gas-powered
engines. Electrical vehicles are now beginning to become more popular with many
different companies. With the rise of gas prices continuously over the years
the introduction of green vehicles have become more popular among consumers.
The question to ask now is how successful will these electrical vehicles be in
the coming years?

Finding a Fresh Christmas Tree
It’s days weeks before Christmas and
you’re running around frantically. The
gifts are unwrapped, the food is unprepared and your Santa hat is nowhere to be
found. Stop. Take a deep breathe and relax, we’re here to
help. Though we won’t be able to cook
your holiday dinner, (we can make a mean roast, by the way) we will be able to
help you with one of your dilemmas: finding the perfect Christmas tree.
Finding the perfect tree starts with one
simple rule: look for the green! According to Elwood Christmas Tree
Farm owner Lee Itzler, the best way to test the health of an evergreen is to
grab a branch of your Christmas tree-to-be and lightly scratch the stem.
"If you see green, the tree will keep its needles longer."
Trees
between 6 and 8 feet are always in high demand, taking between 8 and 10 years
to grow 6 feet tall. Once you pick out
your tree, it’s best to put it inside of your car as opposed to on top. Why? Itzer says: "Strapped on the roof,
the trees get really beat up, wind burned, and desiccated. If you're a local
delivery it really doesn't make a difference, but if you're going on the
highway, then it should go in the car."
If you do have to put it on the roof, put the trunk facing into the
wind.
Once
your tree is home safe and sound, it’s time to get a good stand with heavy
water retention. The tree will soak up a
lot of water over the course of the next couple days, so make sure to keep the
stand full. Viola! Your tree skills have
improved this year!
How
do you retain your tree over the holiday season? Let us know below!

Quick Car Maintenance Tips!
Who really “enjoys” visiting the mechanic, besides the
part-time grease monkey who loves working on his souped-up coupe? That’s right, NO ONE. It’s a draining expense that is required to
get you from point a to point b.
However, car maintenance is a vital tool in maintaining the life of your
car. In today’s blog, we provide some
quick tips to give your vehicle a long prosperous life and avoid the
junkyard.
Octane Overdose
Applying octane to your vehicle can be a sticky
situation. Some is good, but more is
troublesome. Higher-than-required octane
does not yield more power, it just gives more funds to oil companies. Some engines are rated for premium 91 octane
but can burn 87 octane regular. So, run
regular gas if you drive nominal or normal speeds and premium if you’re a speed
demon.
Oil Change Timing
Every 3,000 miles.
It’s been instilled in you since you started driving hot wheel cars in
elementary school. Today, engine design
has made that number obsolete. Some cars
call for 5,000-mile change intervals, some up to 15,000-mile stints. Others
have a variable timer. Follow the schedule and use the oil called for by the
manufacturer.
Dead Tires
Tires wear out and they also die out. A useless tire is extremely dangerous. Heat, sunlight and ozone conditions all
contribute to the wear and tear of your tires.
The tire industry says that tires last about 5 years but it really
depends on so much more. The industry
agreement is about 7 years, but you can check with your mechanic to see how old
your tires are. They’ll be able to see
the time stamp code in the sidewall.

Top 5 Things Drivers HATE
To begin today’s blog, lets paint a vivid
picture of what could, or has, happened during your morning commute. So, there you are, slowly sipping your
morning coffee, the morning dew and the soothing sounds of your favorite band create
a cozy safe haven on your way to work.
Your hands are on the wheel, and you’re focused. Then, out of NOWHERE some (EXPLETIVE) swerves
into your lane, causing you to spill your coffee and react swiftly to avoid
injury. In your panic-stricken state,
you’ve managed to avoid an accident. In
that moment you look up to watch the person that swerved into your lane speed
by, oblivious to what he had just done.
Your keen eyes focus in on him long enough to realize he was updating
his Facebook status. WOW. In today’s blog, we asked our community for
the top 10 things people HATE when they’re driving.
Tailgaters – people that creep behind closely to
your vehicle in a stop and go motion.
Usually they’re in a rush to go nowhere.
Texters – either they’re updating their Facebook
status, tweeting, sending a text or writing their monologue; these individuals
are causing HUGE accidents. This can all
be avoided by focusing on the commute at hand!
The
“no signal when turning lanes” Guy
– this person is infuriating. They
change lanes without looking or indicating.
All of this to arrive at a red light with nowhere to go.
Rubberneckers – there’s always that one person that
stops an entire highway to gawk at something of interest. A pretty billboard, a traffic accident, who
knows? Either way they’re ANNOYING and
troublesome for those pressed for time.
The
Makeup Queen – this young
woman (or man for that matter) is applying an entire face of makeup while
operating a motor vehicle. This is a
HUGE no no.
So, do you have any to add? What really grinds your gears?

How Much Does An Electric Vehicle ACTUALLY Cost to Maintain?
The
Jetsons is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of electric
vehicles, not necessarily a floating utopia equipped with flying cars, but it’s
definitely a wave of the future. With
countless manufacturers rolling our production vehicles and prototypes, it’s
not difficult to get lost in the shuffle.
We’ve heard the conversation around electric vehicles: they’re quiet,
cheap to maintain, and environmentally friendly. Lets delve a bit deeper and get the actual
price of maintaining one.
According
to Edmunds: to figure
out the cost of fueling an EV, start with the electric car's energy consumption
rate, which is expressed as kWh per 100 miles (kWh/100m). This figure will be
listed on the EPA's upcoming EV fuel economy label (the 2011 Leaf's preliminary
label is shown here,
complete with an erroneous 12-cent per kWh figure in the cost estimate that
Nissan says it is correcting). The next figure is your home electric rate,
assuming that's the primary charging site. Multiply the kWh/100m figure by the
electric rate to get the cost per 100 miles. For instance, the Leaf's kWh/100m
figure is 34. If electricity is 11 cents per kWh — the national average — it
would cost $3.74 to go 100 miles.
Utility companies, and the
time and level of use set the electricity cost.
You pay more for kWh at peak hours, making a lot of electric commuters
pay more than the national average of 11 cents per kWh. How do real individuals save on their
electric vehicles?
Tom and Cathy Saxon have two
electric vehicles. They installed
separate electric meters for their EVs (electric vehicles) in July 2009 and
have been tracking them since then. The
Saxton's Tesla is consuming at a rate of 30.8 kWh/100m (bettering its official
EPA rating); the RAV4 is averaging about 35 kWh/100m. They pay an average of 11.25 cents per
kWh. In other words, they drive about 30
miles on a dollar’s worth of electricity, it would be much more expensive to
drive with gas. Results do vary,
depending on a couple factors like when and where you’re charging, but the true
cost of filling up is a tad more complicated than expected.

What Exactly is the Autobahn?
When Autobahn comes to mind, I can’t help
but reference Michael Jackson’s hit “Speed Demon, “ a fast-paced song about the
repercussions of speeding down an infinite highway. THAT is how I picture the Autobahn. Millions of people have heard references to
the famed speedway, but what exactly is it?
Is it a motorway system that lasts an eternity without a speed limit or
a racetrack for the fastest cars in the world?
In today’s blog, we break down WHAT the Autobahn is and how you can see
it for yourself.
The Autobahn, by definition, is a
superhighway or expressway in Germany that stands as one of the last places on
earth where you can drive as fast as you want.
The highway is in no means a free-for-all, with some sections of the
autobahn having speed limits, though great stretches still remain
unrestricted.
The Autobahn national highway system
stretches over 6,800 miles and is designed to connect all of Germany’s major
metropolitan areas. The presumption is
that there are unlimited speeds on the entire Autobahn, but many heavily
trafficked sections of the freeway have speed limits in the 50 to 75 mph range.
The suggested speed for the unlimited sections is 81 mph, though various
speedsters and adrenaline seekers routinely break the fold.
So, you must be wondering HOW fast someone
has ventured into the record books.
Well, in 1938, driver Rudolf Caracciola set an autobahn speed record of
268.8 mph. WOW.
What Exactly is the Autobahn? Find out in
our blog!
